Climate Cafe

Climate Café is a relaxed gathering interested in discussing ideas and questions on climate change and related topics.

It's transdisciplinary, inclusive, jargon-free and fun. It is organised by the ANU Climate Change Institute. We all seek to overcome disciplinary barriers! The approach is modelled on dialogue events such as: Café Philosophic and Café Scientifique.

At each Climate Café event, a guest is invited to present an idea, which is then explored and discussed in smaller groups over lunch.

Climate Café: How can we cut the carbon footprint of our food? »
Food generates a lot of carbon dioxide and equivalent emissions. There's the agricultural impact to grow it (think fertiliser, feed and flatulant cows). Then there's transport, processing, packaging, disposal and food waste. What we eat matters. But which area has the biggest impact? What's the best way to cut back.

What role can music play in climate change communication and adaptation?  Drawing on recent research in West Africa, this Climate Cafe will explore the way musician-farmers in the Gambia are responding to the challenges of a changing climate through song.

Climate Café: Responding to Climate Tipping Points »
Dr Andrew Glikson will give a short presentation about these climate tipping points. Participants will then split into small groups to discuss: Which climate tipping points are likely to have the greatest impact in Australia (environmentally and / or psychologically)? Could better communication of climate tipping points help facilitate more action on climate change?  If so, outline communication approaches. What adaptation measures could we take to lessen their effects?
