ANU professor appointed chair of new QLD Clean Economy Expert Panel
Queensland Minister for Energy and Clean Economy Jobs Michael de Brenni announced today that ANU professor Frank Jotzo has been appointed Chair of the state’s new Clean Economy Expert Panel.
A leading expert in the economics of climate change, Frank Jotzo is Head of Energy at the ANU Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions (ICEDS) and a Professor at the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy.
The Clean Economy Expert Panel was established through Queensland’s recently passed Clean Economy Jobs Act 2024, which set a new emissions reduction target of 75% below 2005 levels by 2035, as well as enshrining in legislation Queensland’s commitment to net zero emissions by 2050.
In his announcement on LinkedIn, Minister de Brenni said “To achieve this ambitious goal, expert advice and strategic guidance are crucial.” The Clean Economy Expert Panel brings together “...a group of esteemed professionals who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table,” said the Minister.
The Panel will provide advice to the Minister about achieving the emissions reduction targets and ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Queensland.
“A low-emissions economy will bring opportunities for lasting prosperity. Ambitious emissions targets open the gate, then comes the journey of making it happen,” said Prof Jotzo.
“Queensland has huge potential for investment in the clean economy of the future. Not only in energy but in industry, agriculture, transport and agriculture."
“This panel will advise the Queensland Government on the way forward, drawing on the wide range of experience of the members. It is a positive that perspectives by the university and broader research sector are prominently represented in an advisory body of this kind,” said Prof Jotzo.
Frank Jotzo has held lead senior author roles with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), is currently also leading Australia’s Carbon Leakage Review, and is a Commissioner of the NSW Net Zero Commission. His research spans decarbonisation strategies and economics of energy transition, policy instruments for climate change and environment, trade and investment and more. He teaches climate policy and economics at ANU Crawford School and in ANU Energy Change Essentials courses.
