Associate Professor Jane Golley

Jane Golley is an Associate Professor, economist and Acting Director of the Australian Centre on China in the World (CIW) in the College of Asia and the Pacific. She completed her undergraduate degree in Economics at the ANU, before undertaking her Mphil and Dphil in Economics at the University of Oxford, where she also taught undergraduate economics for seven years. She returned to the ANU's School of Economics in 2003, moving to the Crawford School of Public Policy in 2009 and then to CIW in 2011.

Jane has published a book on The Dynamics of Chinese Regional Development: Market Nature, State Nurture, and articles in journals including China Economic Review, Energy Economics, The China Journal, The World Economy and Asian Population Studies. She is co-editor of the China Story Yearbook, produced annually by CIW, with the 2017 volume on 'Prosperity' released in April 2018. She engages regularly with bureacrats, diplomats, politicians and the media to contribute to public debate on China's rise and what it means for Australia.

Research interests

Jane specialises in the Chinese economy, doing applied research on a wide range of development and transition issues. Past research has covered: regional development and inequality; household consumption and carbon dioxide emissions; rural-urban migration and urbanisation; gender imbalances and economic growth; inter-generational transmission of education outcomes; and Socialism with Chinese characteristics. 

Recent research interests include Inequality of Opportunity in education and income, the relationship between demographic change and economic growth (e.g. the shift from the one- to two-child policy); and the Geoeconomics of the Belt and Road Initiative.
