IPCC special report Update - Evaluation Report

The 2015 Paris Climate Agreement committed participants to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C.

As a result, governments asked the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to produce a report outlining the possible pathways to meet these targets, their feasibility and costs and the benefits of limiting global warming to 1.5oC vs 2oC. On 8th October, the IPCC will release this special report*.

Prof Mark Howden has been involved in the planning and delivery of this report from the start as a Vice Chair of IPCC Working Group 2 and as a Review Editor. He has been a major contributor to IPCC Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Assessment reports as well as various IPCC Special Reports and the IPCC greenhouse gas inventory methods.

At this public lecture, Mark will discuss the findings of the IPCC Global Warming of 1.5oC Special Report, including the global implications of a 1.5oC rise compared with a 2oC rise.   He’ll outline impacts on human health, the Australian and regional economies and the global environment.

The event will be introduced by Jo Evans, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Environment and Energy (DoEE) and she will also moderate a Q&A session with the audience. The DoEE provides travel support for Australian researchers to participate in the IPCC process and represents Australia at IPCC Plenary meetings.
