COVID-19 and Climate Change - Event series
Recent months have seen the COVID-19 pandemic emerge as a global crisis requiring immediate, wide-spread and evidence-based action.
As countries have taken drastic measures to curb the spread of the virus, comparisons have arisen between the global response to COVID-19 and climate change. Despite their fundamental differences, they are both significant global challenges that require immediate action based upon scientific evidence.
So how and why have our responses differed, and what can we learn from the handling of COVID-19 to apply to our response to climate change?
Join us for this new online event series, COVID-19 and Climate Change, to discuss these questions and more with leading researchers in the area.
These events will be recorded. The recording will be made available after the event through the ANU Climate Change Institute YouTube channel.

Event 1 – COVID-19 and Climate Change: Parallels and disconnects
12pm Thursday, 11 June
Speaker: Prof Mark Howden
A critique of the parallels and disconnects between our understanding and responses to COVID-19 and climate change, featuring leading climate scientist, Prof Mark Howden. Mark will frame the series and delve into what the pandemic and responses to it have revealed about the relationships between science, politics and policy and how this may - or may not - inform new approaches for dealing with climate change.

Event 2 – COVID-19 and Climate Change: Policy responses
12pm Thursday, 25 June
Speakers: Prof Sharon Friel and Prof Warwick McKibbin
Prof Sharon Friel, an expert in health policy and climate change, and leading economist Prof Warwick McKibbin will engage in an interactive discussion on how policymakers are responding to COVID-19 and what we can learn regarding climate policy responses.
Event 3 – COVID-19 and Climate Change: Communications

Speakers: Dr Will Grant and Dr David Holmes
An interactive discussion featuring communication experts Dr Will Grant and Dr David Holmes on COVID-19 communications, community responses and what the implications are for how we communicate around climate change.
Event 4 – COVID-19 and Climate Change: Health implications
12pm Thursday, 23 July
Speakers: Dr Aparna Lal and Dr Arnagretta Hunter
Environmental health researcher Dr Aparna Lal, and cardiologist Dr Arnagretta Hunter will discuss the health implications of COVID-19 and climate change. They’ll cover public health responses and any learnings we can apply to addressing the health impacts of climate change.
Event 5 - COVID-19 and Climate Change: Climate negotiations
12pm, Thursday 6 August
Speakers: Hon. Prof Howard Bamsey and Prof Meg Keen
International relations experts Prof Howard Bamsey and Prof Meg Keen will discuss learnings from and implications of COVID-19 for global climate negotiations, and climate action and responses in the Pacific.
