On the occasion of the Italian Research Day, the Embassy of Italy; co-supported by the ANU Energy Change Institute and the ANU Mathematical Sciences Institute, invite you to a virtual visit of the SPIDER Laboratory, in Padua, Italy, and presentations highlighting Australian-ITER fusion research.

Inaugurated in Padua on 11 June 2018, SPIDER (Source for the Production of Ions of Deuterium Extracted from a Radiofrequency plasma) is the most powerful negative ion beam source in the world - and a key platform to develop the neutral beam heating sources required for ITER. Neutral beam heating produces the extreme temperature necessary to ignite fusion reactions.

The ITER experiment will reproduce, here on Earth, the fusion energy process that powers the Sun, at temperatures of 150 million°C, about 10 times the temperature of the Sun.

The SPIDER laboratory is open to collaboration with international scientists.

The Italian Research Day is an initiative launched by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) to promote the work of Italian researchers and international scientific collaboration.
