Climate change is already affecting communities across the world, with 2023 the hottest year on record globally. In Australia, we are experiencing changes in extreme weather, with more frequent and intense heatwaves, storms, flooding and bushfires. Government departments, private organisations and community groups are planning, developing and implementing strategies to address current and projected changes to our climate.

This Climate Essentials short course has been designed for professionals who want an overview of the latest developments around climate change.

Delivered by the ANU Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions, this short course brings together leading climate researchers from across the University to discuss the science of climate change and policy responses across a range of sectors.

Scope

The course will provide a summary of the latest climate science, followed by an overview of climate change adaptation, renewable energy technologies and other climate change mitigation opportunities, communicating climate change, climate change impacts and water, the geopolitics of climate change in our region, and climate change impacts on human health. The course is tailored to consider the decisions faced by government departments, non-government organisations, and the private sector within an Australian, regional and international climate change context.

• The course is delivered in-person.
• Course program includes six lectures on climate change-related topics and group discussions to enable direct interaction with lecturers and other course participants.
• A short break punctuates each session, and 45 minutes is allocated for lunch. Full catering is provided.
• Course timings are 8.45am - 5.15pm.
• The course is held at The Australian National University, Acton campus, ACT.

Who should attend?

This course has been designed for professionals who are either relatively new to working on climate change, or who are stepping back into a climate role and want a refresher on the latest climate research, impacts of climate change and policy responses in terms of both mitigation and adaptation. Participants on our courses generally come from a range of sectors. This diversity of perspectives is valuable during course discussions given that climate change impacts are being felt across our economy and society.
