Director of the ANU Climate Change Institute, Professor Mark Howden, has been appointed to a key national panel to advise the government on climate science.
Professor Howden will serve on the National Climate Science Advisory Committee alongside other senior scientists and experts, including Chief Scientist Dr Alan Finkel and the secretaries of the Department of Industry, Innovation and the Department of Environment and Energy.
Professor Howden, who is a Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), is an authority on climate adaption and managing climate risk.
“Australia has significant, world class climate science capacity across a large range of organisations including the ANU,” Professor Howden said.
“I welcome this opportunity to help make the most of this capacity through working on this new committee.”
“It is important to enhance collaboration across agencies and across sectors of the economy and to provide guidance on investments in science to maximise national benefit and maintain and strengthen Australia’s research capability.”
The National Climate Science Advisory Committee will advise the government on a strategy for climate science in Australia, promote domestic and international collaboration across key climate science agencies, and promote Australia’s climate science research capabilities.
