In 2025, Australia experienced simultaneous flooding in northern regions and drought in southern regions. 

As we travel further from the historical bounds of the Earth’s natural systems, climate-fueled disasters are increasingly the new normal. 

While still carrying the load of mitigation, Australia must now also plan for a changed climate. Our future policy direction is already being laid down, with the release of the first National Climate Risk Assessment and National Adaptation Plan last year. 

In 2026, the ANU Climate Update will include a special focus on adaptation. Join us for the latest data, research and perspectives from leading experts shaping our response to this rapidly-evolving challenge. 

Program: 

• 9.30am. The 2026 Climate Update 

  • Professor Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick will present the keynote address, an overview of the climate in 2025. She will then be joined by Emeritus Professor Mark Howden to discuss and reflect on the implications for adaptation. 

• 10.10am. Adaptation from above: innovative approaches to adaptation and disaster risk reduction using satellite and drone technology 

  • Associate Professor Johanna Nalau (Griffith University) will kick off a panel conversation with insights from the International Space Science Institute on Earth Observation and its adaptation applications. Joining Johanna in discussion is the Director of The Australian National University Institute for Space Professor Anna Moore. More panelists to be announced. 

• 10.55am. Morning tea 

• 11.15am. Adaptation on the ground: Implementing adaptation plans at the local level

  • Associate Professor Jo Mummery (University of Canberra) will begin the discussion with her practical adaptation strategies. Joining her in discussion will be Nicole Mitchell, Branch Head of the National Adaptation Office, Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, to discuss implementing the National Adaptation Plan and Jenny Edwards, Managing Director and Lead Scientist of Light House ArchiScience, on her work making homes more climate resilient.
