Dr Casas Ramos’ research focuses on unravelling high temperature solid-gas reaction processes on Earth systems, and how these contribute to the (re-)distribution of volatiles on Earth. Her previous research has focused on experimentally testing reactions between volatiles (S, Cl) and rocks, glasses and ash in volcanic settings. These reactions are still poorly understood but are essential to understand and potentially predict the impacts of volcanism on Earth.

Her current research aims to unravel the kinetics of reactions between SO₂ gas and rock-forming minerals, by combining a novel experimental set up, various state-of-the-art analytical characterisation techniques and geochemical modelling. Gaining understanding on the reactions between sulfur-gases and minerals is important because they are key agents for the re-distribution of sulphur on earth and planetary systems, thus are essential to better understand ore-deposit formation processes and to gain accuracy in estimating sulphur budgets during volcanic eruptions and in geochemical cycles.
