Fenner School of Environment and Society

Dr. Sombol Mokhles is a Laureate Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Fenner School of Environment and Society, Australian National University.

Her expertise spans urban studies, data science, machine learning, and urban climate governance. She is particularly interested in cities’ networking practices for addressing climate change, system dynamic modelling and city archetypes, and networked resilience.

Sombol completed her PhD at the University of Melbourne (2024) on “Reimagining Climate Urban Comparison Through A ‘More Global’ Urban Science,” which applied urban science methods to identify diverse typologies of cities based on their mitigation actions. Her work highlights socio-spatial diversity in cities worldwide, including the Global South, to support reimagining more equitable climate networks between cities.

She also holds a background in architecture and a Master’s in Urban Design from Shahid Beheshti University, Iran, as well as an MPhil in Urban Studies from the University of Cambridge.
