Janelle is a palaeoecologist with experience working in Southeast Asia, the Pacific and Australia. Her work focusses on landscapes of the past, and the long-term environmental dynamics and human-environmental relationships that shape them. Janelle’s research is an intersection of environmental science, earth science and archaeological science with a focus on providing perspectives for current environmental management.  

Janelle is leading or involved in several multi-disciplinary collaborative projects. Two current major projects are her roles as a Chief Investigator on the ARC Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage (CABAH) and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Environmental Histories and Futures (CIEHF). A key aspect of her role is overseeing the integration of data from sedimentary records with contemporary ecological data, historical narratives and Indigenous knowledge of landscape, to create a more holistic view of environmental change.
