Dr Thang Do

Dr Thang Nam Do is a Fellow in the Resources, Environment and Development Program at the Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University (ANU), and Deputy Director of the Vietnam Policy Studies Hub.

He is an environmental economist and policy specialist with expertise in energy transition governance, carbon pricing, climate policy, and sustainable development in Vietnam, the Mekong region, and Southeast Asia. His work focuses on supporting evidence-based pathways to decarbonisation in developing economies through institutionally robust and politically feasible policy reforms.

His research examines the political economy of energy transitions, carbon markets, climate governance, water-energy-food systems, and environmental policy. He combines economic analysis with policy and governance perspectives to design practical solutions for accelerating decarbonisation while supporting economic development and social outcome

He has published in leading international journals on energy, climate, environmental governance, and development economics, including Energy Policy, Climate Policy, Marine Policy, and Earth System Governance. His work contributes to regional and international policy debates on energy transition, sustainable development, climate governance, and institutional reform.

With 30 years of professional experience in the region, Dr Do brings a unique combination of research excellence and high-level policy leadership. Prior to joining ANU, he served as Deputy Director General for International Cooperation at Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Vietnam’s Operational Focal Point to the Global Environment Facility (GEF), Chair of the ASEAN Working Group on Climate Change, and National Focal Point to several regional environmental cooperation mechanisms.

He has advised governments and international organisations, including the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Global Environment Facility, and United Nations agencies, on climate policy, energy transition, environmental governance, and sustainable development. He also convenes the United Nations Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership Roundtable Series and leads executive training programmes on climate and energy governance for Vietnamese Members of Parliament and senior policymakers.

Dr Do holds a PhD in Environmental Economics from the Australian National University, a Master of Environment Management and Development from ANU, and a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering from the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Canada.
