Michael has been a Research Fellow at the ANU Climate Change Institute (2014-) & Fenner School of Environment & Society since 2006. He has served on the ANU Energy Change Institute Executive.
He co-founded & was Research Director of the Natural Edge Project (TNEP) (2002-2009) with Dr Karlson Hargroves, Assoc Prof Cheryl Desha and Dr Peter Stasinopoulos. He also helped catalyse the Australian Campuses Towards Sustainability network. He was a co-recipient of a Prime Minister's Banksia Environmental Award with Natural Edge Project colleagues & an ANU Individual Green Award for these respective complementary initiatives.
Michael has completed almost 25 research projects having jointly won >$2 million in competitive research grants. He principle researcher & -co-author of 200+ publications. He has made novel contributions to the fields of climate change, green growth, sustainable design and education for sustainability as summarised in his biographies on Academia.Edu and LinkedIN (links below).
His most recent two co-authored books were ranked #5th and #12 best sustainability publications in the world by Cambridge University, and his first edited and co-authored book was the recipient of the Prime Minister's Banksia Award for Leadership in Environmental Education.
Many of his co-authored publications (incl. 6 books(100,000+sales,7 translations), UNEP reports, 7 online textbooks, 30+ book chapters, were done for & are promoted by the Green Growth Knowledge Platform, UNEP, UNESCO, STEM Organisations, Investor Group on Climate Change, & Australian Government, As a result he has an H-Index of 18, i10 index of 18, 1000 citations since 2012 (google scholar), a ResearchGate Score of 19.21 with >43,000+ reads, and is ranked in Top 1% on Academia.Edu.
All his post graduate students have excelled in their theses. His lectures have always been ranked highly at least 4.5 out of 5. He has represented ANU in policy outreach initiatives & helped deliver ANU intensive training courses to a high standard.
